History

Native American tribes already occupied this site in 1805 when noted explorers Lewis and Clark arrived on the scene. They named the river near the site Labeasche River for one of their French-Canadian companions, but the name later changed to Dog River after early pioneers stranded in the area resorted to eating dog meat to survive. This unsavory name was changed at the behest of early settler Mary Coe in the mid-19th century. She suggested the current moniker based on the proximity of Mount Hood. The valley where this idyllic community is found has always been known for its agriculture. Its pears and apples are particularly renowned and still much in demand today.
